Freefalling with God.

Someone once asked, “Where does your faith come from?” I thought about it for a moment and realized that my faith comes from surrender. One would think that the opposite is true, that is, surrender comes through faith.

That isn’t how it has worked in my life.

Wherever I have journeyed, my faith has always been strengthened and lived out through surrender.

Surrender can be a scary concept.

I am not talking about submission to the wind that blows where it wills but rather a letting go to the breath of the Spirit who gives life, purpose and meaning to my journey as I detach from the safety nets of control. Perhaps it is more about trusting in the presence of God wherever I find myself.

Believe or not, “Not my will but your will be done” seems to work for me. This doesn’t mean that I don’t pray and seek to hear God’s voice or the Spirit’s promptings but it does mean that sometimes I have to be still and listen more deeply to the still small voice beneath the shouts of a personal enthusiasm.

I am sitting in a library across the street from my new home. I am waiting for my furniture, cars and life possessions to be delivered tomorrow. This has given me time to reflect and listen to the hope this part of my life’s journey presents.

There’s the old saying, “Leap and the net will appear.” There’s no way I can have faith that the net will appear unless I leap.

I am in an exhilarating place suspended in the air from a 2,800 mile leap into the unknown. I am not looking for the net. I know that the net is beneath somewhere so I am going to enjoy the freefall as I breathe in the breath of the Spirit that holds me. I am freefalling with God.

Thanks for your prayers.

I'm free falling that's for sure... I know God's hand (net) is there to catch me, just not sure where I will land. :)

God is AWESOME!

Rick,

I read this on Scot McKnight's Jesus Creed blog

Top Ten Reasons Why Men Should Not Be Ordained
http://www.jesuscreed.org/?p=980#comments

and I wanted to give you credit if I use it. Did you write it?

Sorry to interrup this post but I tried to email you and it bounced back.

Thanks. It's great.

Andy, thanks for pointing Rick's comment out~ I never got through all the comments left on that post, and Rick's was great!

Rick, my own faith grew out of the first act of surrender. It's interesting to note that after that, I noticed it became cyclic~ my surrender led me to faith, and my faith led me to more surrender, which led to more faith, etc.

I used to say (during a really hard time in my faith-building) that faith is jumping off a cliff in the dark~ and screaming on the way down doesn't take points off!

I would encourage the screamers: you've probably noticed that it gets easier as you jump more often; and as you practice faith, you find it grows stronger, till you're pretty good at weathering the fall in the dark.

I might add, Rick, that faith is easier to deal with when the stakes aren't so high~ for example, watching a spouse die is harder to have faith over than it would be to maintain faith during a move across the country.

I'm with you on this! My faith is always strengthened by surrender.

If you actually DID land in Oz...let me know. I'm here as well!

Thanks for your words, they're really encouraging for me. I find it really hard to ENJOY the freefall, I'm usually too busy looking for some way to take back control (like a parachute or something? to extend the metaphor?) and maybe end up missing the net. If that makes any sense at all. Thanks again!

Thanks friends!

Andy, it is not original and I linked the source on my blog post under the same title.

Christine, I agree, certain leaps of faith are much different.

Wow - Rick, did you read my column called "Faith's Freefall" at UPI? So eery. This is how I describe my whole journey. It is a freefall... which to me is faith, not mental assent or assurance or any number of security measures we attempt to grasp to keep from sliding or falling.

Faith's Freefall at UPI

Synchronicity!

Glad you're in your new home. Hope spring greeted you in flowers.
