Would Jesus Make the List?

I wonder if Jesus would have made the list-- The Top 25 Most Influential Evangelicals in America? This is not to take away from any of the accomplishments of those on the list, but I wonder if Jesus would have made the list. I watched the Larry King interview on Tuesday and what I heard from some of the evangelicals wasn’t good news. (Brian did a great job, IMO. Thank you.)

Something tells me that if Jesus were bopping around here today that he wouldn’t make the list, however, had he made the list I imagine based on what I read in the gospels that he would have pissed-off some very influential Evangelicals in this country. You know some would be envious of his influence, (It got him killed the first time) and some would just consider his good news heresy. Why doesn’t the good news that Jesus proclaimed sound like the message that many of these evangelicals proclaim? Which one is the good news? When I sense one salivating when they speak of "hell" I question their good news.

I imagine if Jesus had made the list and been invited by Larry King to appear on the show, some of those who spoke would have refused to appear with the Jewish guy with dirty toe-nails, bad breath and a radical theology. I suspect some would claim that his message of love (although nice) would lead him and others straight to hell, where some sure seem to salivate by the thought.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Jesus was considered a negative influence by many of the most influential Evangelicals in America.

Agreed! The major message I got from Graham and the LaHayes was that Jesus is about to destroy the world in fire, and we'd best do this really non-specific thing called "accepting Jesus as our savior" in order to catch the last glory train out.

Oh, and something about homosexuals.

Where was the good news?

Must be why they invited Brian (and Jakes for that matter; did you notice that those two seemed to talk the least?).

#1 - Where was Jim Wallis on that list?

#2 - In my humble opinion....too many old white guys in suits.

I didn't get to see the interviews - no cable - but I heard from several people who did, and your report (and the comments) basically mirrored what I'd heard.

I agree with you, Rick - the lesson was learned more than 30 years ago: fear doesn't drive too many people to conversion. Back in 1972, the TV program Scared Straight tried to show kids what a life of crime would end up like. Somehow, it didn't seem to scare many kids into a crime-free life - including me, for that matter.

You know, I read this Bible-thing that evangelicals keep getting so excited about...but what I keep hearing is, "Repent, for the kingdom of Heaven is at hand" (Matthew 3:2, or 4:17, or...you name it). Only in Luke 13 do we get the "repent or perish." So should we be focusing on the one "perish" entry, or the 12 "Kingdom" entries? Hmmm...

And I agree whole-heartedly with James - I keep wanting to print buttons and bumperstickers that say something like "I'm Christian, but I'm not with them." But, of course, that would only add to the us/them nonsense that folks like LaHaye keep pushing...that there are folks that are righteous, and folks that ain't, and don't get caught with that last group (even though this Jesus guy tended to spend a lot of time around 'em, doesn't mean YOU should...).

::sigh:: "...a voice crying in the wilderness..." Keep speaking truth to power, brother. I'll try to do the same.
