Insanity & a dying church.
Einstein is noted as saying, "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting results." I wonder how this same philosophy can be applied to the church? What is the church doing over and over again yet expecting different results? It doesn’t matter what context one comes from in attempting to address this issue the question is still challenging to all of us. What behaviors, patterns, understandings, or beliefs are we repeating expecting different results? I don’t think it matters if it is the mainline or evangelical, if the church repeats certain behaviors or "histories" and expects different results it is acting insane according to Einstein’s definition.
Just back from a church conference dealing with pastoral issues like conflict resolution in a congregational development context. I am exhausted, but this thought came to me this morning. Sometimes we try to change by doing the same thing over and over only with different language, labels, or packages without raising or changing our level consciousness.
Insanity: Unsoundness of mind sufficient in the judgment.
Consciousness: sense of one's personal or collective identity, especially the complex of attitudes, beliefs, and sensitivities held by or considered characteristic of an individual or a group.

sir:
i have been struggling between grace and addiction for some time now, and have been reading your blog for the past 5 months as I have begun to tiptoe into the wonderful community that is AA. sir, you say you are in the ad biz, but i am coming to wonder if it is God's will for you to have a 2nd profession one day. your postings always inspire me, and at times give me great hope. we are both spiritual, though i have always been more comfortable as an outsider.
god bless
Oh yeah, babe. And it ain't just the church...the not-for-profit I work for is another poster-child for "insanity." But I'll admit that we in the church do the "hit 'em again...harder...harder" thing without ever considering if that might be the right action.
I've come to see that at least part of the repetition of broken ideas is based in fear. If we're afraid of change, then very often we "go with what we know" - even if it's wrong, or broken, or anchored in sin. It takes faith to take the unknown road, even if the road we are on certainly leads to destruction. I think when we address the faith issue, the fear goes away, and the communal vision becomes clearer.
(I never knew that quote was Einstein's, either. See the things I learn from hangin' around with you!)
it sometimes feels as if i'm on a merry-go-round with no idea as to how in the hell to get off...
the inevitable seems to be that i'm not going to escape this cycle without some scrapes...
let the blood flow...
