Give peace a chance.

What is the one thing that you want in life?

The main thing that I probably desire more than anything in my life is inner peace.

It seems lie we create these ideals in our minds that will make us happy and we set out in the pursuit of happiness: school, cars, jobs, relationships, vacations, children, a new house, and more things to make us happy, yet it seems that what we are really searching for is inner peace.

Funny, scripture teaches that fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, and peace; happiness doesn’t make the list. Yet consider the ways in which people try to find happiness and how the pursuit of happiness often leads to an absence of peace and results in conflict. We are trying to "get" something versus "be" something.

My inner peace is something that I attempt to honor and protect. I like it way too much to just hand it off so easily to someone or something. Honoring and protecting my inner peace is one way that I love myself.

It can be as simple as saying no to a request
Or no, thank you.
It can also mean saying yes to truth which is form of acceptance.

I maintain my serenity and inner peace by naming my realities and being honest with myself. The more honest, and therefore authentic I am, the more at peace I am. The test is simple: when I do not have inner peace there is a good chance I am not being honest or authentic. To do this I need to listen carefully to my soul, heart and to the Still Small voice within.

Maintaining peace requires my being still, and quiet. The quieter I am mentally, physically, and emotionally, the more I can hear. This means that I may have to step away from the noise of "timesharing sales pitches" of the world and the noise in my head.

It s hard to give peace a chance when we are not peace with ourselves.

It sounds like you have a good handle on this. I struggle with being still and listening. Logically I know that happiness should not be our pursuit, I just sometimes get too busy to have true peace in my own skin.

I will follow the Psalmists on this...

The main thing that I probably desire more than anything in my life is ... God.

Thanks for your comments.

DJG, I wish I did have a handle on it, just when I think I do I find that I don't. :)

Bumble, thanks for your comments.
I agree as well, I too desire GOd. And the point of my post is that the fruit of God in me is love, joy, peace... I want that peace more than I want "happiness". So often folks seek happiness when what they are seeking is "peace."
There are those who think they desire God but are dropping bombson folks, they have an absence of "peace".

I want peace, too.

But more like Paul, who learned to be content no matter what.

I haven't learned that yet.

sigh.
