Bruce Lee, dying & Santa Claus.

"Come Die with Us." How’s that for Church ad? I doubt you’ll see that on many signs in front of churches. Dying sucks. We like pregnancy; we like birth; we like new starts, but we resist death. Somehow in America we have turned Jesus into Super Messiah—a combination of Clint Eastwood, Bruce Lee, Marcus Welby, and Santa Claus?

But our scripture doesn’t say, "For God so loved the world that he sent Clint Eastwood or Santa Claus." Our faith says God sent Jesus. God incarnated. God becomes one of us. The Divine enters our stories and into the pain of our lives and our world. And he says, "If you want to follow me you gotta die; if you really want to live, then be willing to die." No wonder so few of us really want to follow this dude, or we’ve reduced it to some form of moral code of conduct: don’t drink, cuss, or smoke. No offense, but that is horse-crap. I often say, "I don't have the guts to follow Jesus so I settle for being a Christian."

I prefer the Abraham Maslow version of Jesus: the one who meets my security needs and helps me "self-actualize". It's all about me. How ‘bout you? What are you attempting to keep alive: Control? Pride? Fear? Maybe another way to ask this is where are you attempting to avoid pain? Or what part of yourself do you not want to let God touch?

Why follow a beat-up, spat upon, seemingly defeated Jewish Rabbi? Intellectually it makes no sense… it makes a lousy infomercial for Jesus, not to mention a poor strategy for church growth. Brokeness, vulnerability, and pain is scary... and leaves scars. My gut instinct and everything in me tells me to run the other way from Jesus; yet everything in my soul yearns for what the Christ offers: Life with God today in God's world. May we show each other our scars?

Today’s reading from Luke in The Message says, "Simply put, if you are not willing to take what is dearest to you, whether plans or people, and kiss it good-bye you cannot be my disciple. Are you listening to this? Are you really listening?"

As the church we are inviting people to die. Not to live comfortably in their suburbs, but to die to self and all that stands in the way of the Reign of God. Good advertising can sell a bad product once, but never twice. Are we really selling the Jesus message? Or are we using "loss leaders" to attract a mass?

Jesus’ true identity was revealed at the cross. And God knows that is where we’ll find our true identity—at our cross. We’ll never begin to emerge and experience the power of the Jesus’ message until we begin to see it as a gigantic contradiction of everything the world attempts to tell us about who we are. That is why Jesus stuns people, because he is a contradiction to the world’s way. "Kissing it good-bye" is where our fear and doubts and the threat of not self-actualizing are executed. Jesus doesn’t discard life--- he transforms life.

Every 12-stepper knows that it is only in dying to ourselves that we become truly alive with the Creator and Sustainer of Life… where we are resurrected. Do we dare die? Only if we want to truly live.

I told you early on that I envied the raw truth of your statement about settling for being a Christian instead of following Jesus. It is *so* true for me - so I'm glad I found truth-in-my-life in your words. In the end, that is one of the best things about people of faith sharing in blogs - we see our own struggles, and our victories, reflected in each others' sturggles.

Yeah, I often struggle with which Jesus I want - the "Madonna-Like-A-Prayer" Jesus, the "I'm-comin'-back-and-I'm-gonna-GIT-you-evil-suckas" Jesus, the Martha Stewart "isn't-everything-beautiful-now-that-we-have-it-all" Jesus...but I love the idea of Christ as the peak of the Maslow hierarchy. I've been reading "The Spirit of Discipline" by Dallas Willard, and that's pretty much what he advocates.

I was astonished when I first met Tex Sample, and found that he could cuss like a dockworker (as I am ever so capable of doing, too). Then I found out he'd BEEN an oil-field worker (close) before he went into ministry. He was one of the first folks who put the lie to the "don't-drink-don't-chew-don't-go-with-girls-that-do" kind of Christianity...for which I am grateful.

One of those "oh, wow" moments was in an AA meeting, when a very young, very newly-sober guy admitted for the first time, with tears in his eyes, "I've finally decided that if I don't have God in my life, I'm f***ed." It was a holy moment - although it did provoke an *entirely* different reaction at the men's bible study the next morning - but it's still true for me today.

That young man let us see how very desperately he needed the transforming power of God...in the only language he knew. It will never "preach" - but it *is* true...for him, and for me. That kind of moment reminds me just what I am giving up, in following Jesus - and just what I am receiving in turn. Thanks for stimulating this kind of thought tonight, Rick.

Good post. And if you don't mind, I think I'll use your "Come Die With Us" on my signboard at St. P's during Easter.

Besides, dying really isn't that hard is it? You just let go.

I do not believe it is as simple as just letting go Sir. Not only is dying to ourselves incredibly fearful, it is likewise incredibly hard. That is why our prayer should not be that we are given strength to live in Christ, but that we are given strength to die in Christ. Not only is living the Christ-like life something that can only be done by the grace of God, but dying is something that grace alone can do. Therefore let us pray that through grace we may die, so that through us grace may abound.

This is truly unreal. I've spent the day under John Piper (in 2 sessions) where he uses Phil 1:21...to die is gain & then begins the 2nd session with..."it is my prayer tonight, that no one would boast in anything other than the cross thru which we are crucified to the world & the world to us"...

Then I come back to the hotel & see this...

Sounds like a commentary for deathway.com if you ask me...

Thanks Rick for the reality check. Death is the ultimate reality...just like in life, we fight to avoid it...it's something we don't want to talk about. Maybe if we avoid it it won't happen. Jesus talked about it, " without death there can be no life ". We think as death being terminal...the end of the road. But in the reality of Jesus, death is the beginning. But really, right now, am I ready to let every self-absorbed piece of me and my little created world die...so that He can become my life...and my little created world become his Kingdom. God I hope so...come die with us.

Thank you for this post. It comes at a time when my soul cries out in need of the Word of God and fellowship with those who choose to follow Him.

Thank you for challenging me to let go of what stands between me and my relationship with the Lord.
