Grace and the fear of abandonment

"There are very few people who realize what God would make of them if they abandoned themselves into his hands, and let themselves be formed by his grace. (St Ignatius) I ask for the grace to trust myself totally to God's love." From Sacred Space

Have you abandoned yourself into God’s hands? I am not talking about an intellectual idea of surrendering to a power greater than you, but an opening of yourself in which you give up wholly to the Holy One.

A "bandon" means, under one’s jurisdiction… power, authority, and justice. Have you given yourself over to God’s power, authority, and justice? Do you have fear of abandonment? Not that God is going to abandon you, but fear of abandoning yourself to God?

People who have fear of abandonment suffer from an unwillingness to let go and often cling to or hold onto unhealthy relationships etc., purely out of not wanting to face being alone. It is an unhealthy pattern of living. In the same way, we hold on to people, places, and things… we won’t let go purely out of not wanting to be left alone. We suffer from fear of abandonment… fear of abandoning ourselves to God.

What are you clinging to?
Fear? What fear? Anger? Resentment? A person? Attitudes? What would your life look like today if you abandon that part of yourself to God? What would you look like if you allowed whatever you cling to to be formed by God's grace. I have to ask myself these questions daily... to examine my consciousness each day to discover what I fear abandoning to God.

May we, by God’s grace, over come our fear of abandonment.
