Have You Hugged a Cab Driver Lately?

Walking out of my hotel in Center City Philadelphia yesterday I pulled my 53 pound suitcase along with my 53 pound, heavy heart with me.

I was sad.

It was one of those sad feelings that I don’t have very often. I was leaving my wife after having spent nearly three weeks together in Philadelphia and returning to San Francisco as a part of our transition across the United States.

I had the phone number of a cab driver who had given my wife and me a ride earlier in the week. I called him and he met me in front of my hotel.

When I got in the car he looked and me and asked, “Where’s your wife?” I sadly told him that we must be apart of the next two months but I hoped to return in February for a visit.

We talked as we drove. I shared with him that it is hard making a move across the United States; trusting and wondering if one is making the right decision.

That’s when he shared with me that God is with me in this transition and would carry us through. He told me the story of having to leave Pakistan and arriving in New York City with $600 in his pocket and no place to go. He explained that the fear of being alone in an unfamiliar country and the absence of his family made him want to catch the next flight home but he trusted God to finish what God had started in his life. He said that life now in the United States is like a miracle and that he is so happy to be here.

“You must trust God. God will take care of you.” When he said those words my heavy sadness and sense of loss vanquished and I felt God’s embrace.

As we pulled in the airport he hopped out and grabbed my luggage. I asked “What’d I owe you?” He replied, “Nothing. It is my gift to you.”

Still sitting in the back seat I looked up at his name/ID card posted on the seat, it said Michael Emmanuel. The names mean:
Michael: who is like God?
Emmanuel: God with us.

I got out of the cab and said goodbye, that’s when we hugged. Right there outside the US Air gate in the middle of the busy airport traffic I hugged the messenger God had sent to comfort me-- my cab driver from Pakistan.

Wherever you are in your life know that there is no other like God. You belong to God not because of what you do but because of who you are. God is with you, not because of what you have done, but because of who God is. Trust God to see you through
. Listen to the messengers God sends to comfort you, wherever you may find them-- especially if it is a cab driver named Michael Emmanuel in Philaldelphia.

Rick! What an incredible experience. God knew, He sent Michael.

I am sorry you have to be apart from your woman for so long...I hope the time flies by and the two of you can be together again soon.

I guess I won't think of you as sitting above me anymore (I visualize people on a map in my head) now you'll be WAY OVER THERE one the east coast!

great post, Rick.. what an amazing story.

i hope if the move cross country requires you to drive at any point, you'll plan a stop in Fort Wayne.

you'll probably need a beer by that point in the trip. it's on me..

Oh wow....

It's amazing what can happen when we first choose to realize that we are all equal in God's eyes (even big-city cab drivers from nations NOT dominated by white people), and then when we choose to open up and LISTEN to people that happen to come into our lives (even big-city cab drivers from nations NOT dominated by white people).

My prayers are with you during this tense transition in your life.

Peace.

Thanks for sharing this wonderful story. Michael Emmanuel. It almost makes me wonder if he's an angel in real life, and is moonlighting as a Earthling cabbie!

It reminds me of something that happened to me recently. I learned that unexpected appearances of enso (the Zen circle) work as a sign of God's presence in my life, kind of like a smile or pat on the back.

Monday night, I found myself brimming over with enthusiasm as I was driving home. When stopped at a red light, I saw enso right in front of me.(It had actually been a while.) This enso was actually the taillight of a car in front of me.
As it started up when the light turned green, I read the license plate. It was GVTHANKS.

Moves suck. Or at least they can, and there's always some sadness at leaving dear people and places.

Take this smile from God as a comfort and encouragement. Who is like God?
God is with US!

Love your blog, and that one was so good I had to email it to everyone!

I hope your transition goes well. I am going through one myself, and it is SO reassuring to be reminded that GOD IS WITH US.

Michael Emmanuel is a beautiful expression of God, as you are, dear Rick.

I can feel your sadness. But there is such sweetness to it - a tender sweet missing.

I shall hold this soft image of you in the light.

Love ~M

blessings in your separation :(
its not easy but God knows the sacrifice and when Glory goes to Him - you can be sure you will be blessed

I hate change
I hate transition
and I hate separation

but I too will leave home tomorrow- only for two weeks- and know that God is in it.

Awesome post. I went through this going from TX to serve at a church in MD. I needed a lot of God's love with skin.

How so Inspiring and awesome - I have some friends going through this same thing that need to read this - I'll tell them about it! Kelly & Jim this is for you!!

We all have angels among us we just have to listen more to the people around us - be open - be love - Be God with skin on because we never know when he will use us to inspire someone in need.

God is helping you through this and you know it that must be so heart warming!!

Many More Blessings!
